F.W. Murnau's German silent classic is the original--and some say most frightening--DRACULA adaptation, taking Bram Stoker's novel and turning it into a haunting, shadowy dream full of dread. Names had to be changed from the novel when Stoker's wife charged his novel was being filmed without proper permission.

Count Orlok, the rodentlike vampire frighteningly portrayed by Max Schreck, is perhaps the most animalistic screen portrayal of a vampire ever filmed. The design was copied by Werner Herzog in his 1979 remake and by Tobe Hooper for his telefilm of Stephen King's SALEM'S LOT that same year. NOSFERATU is an eerie, menacing film that should not be missed.

4 out of 5 stars A must for any Vampire movie collection 00/00/0000
C. Roman  from NY Says:
Very loosely based on "Dracula", Murnau changed the names of the main characters, set the story in Bremen, Germany and tied it to an outbreak of plague in 1838, all in a failed effort to work around the then still existent copyright of the novel. The vampire of the film is probably the closest to a classic Vampire (Strigoi, Vrokolas, Nactsehrer, etc.) ever to be put on celluloid. He looks truly hideous, like reanimated corpse instead of a debonaire aristocrat. Where most adaptations of the novel make the Count sexy and alluring, this one is as repulsive and disturbing as you will ever see, played excellently by the character actor Max Screck (Schreck means fear in German, and its appropriate that that is the actors real surname). To get the full effect of this film, you HAVE to watch it late at night and in a darkened room, just like you would be in a theater. Make sure to devote the time to watch it in its entirety on the first try, and keep in mind that this is NOT the Dracula you're used to.
